Municipalities are increasingly seen as being in the forefront of the fight against climate change. Urban planning, green design, transportation, waste management and other infrastructure decisions that municipalities make can have significant climate change impacts. Whether a municipality needs to develop or understand its GHG emissions inventory, or is looking to generate revenue through offset credits from GHG mitigation activities, ClimateCHECK has the credible and practical GHG management solutions to ensure environmental and community benefits.
More and more municipalities are undertaking actions related to climate change mitigation. Many of these actions are voluntary - actions spearheaded by concerned mayors, staff, citizens and champions within communities – but an increasing number of jurisdictions are imposing climate change related legislation on municipalities. ClimateCHECK’s expertise in GHG measurement and management helps municipalities understand, develop and implement climate change mitigation measures that exceed requirements and expectations, while delivering benefits to the community and the environment.
ClimateCHECK has demonstrated experience in developing and assessing GHG quantification methodologies for municipal GHG projects. This includes assessing the GHG benefits of landfill gas (LFG) capture and destruction/utilisation projects, waste to energy systems, building and facility energy efficiency projects, distributed and community energy systems, composting programs, and waste water projects. ClimateCHECK has also audited the auditors on behalf of municipal governments for GHG projects in the USA and Canada.
Additionally, ClimateCHECK offers expert strategic guidance on municipal climate change issues to both municipalities and related government programs. ClimateCHECK is the author of a major study of GHG management in municipal operations, and ClimateCHECK personnel include the author of the Project Performance Reporting System, the ISO-compliant reporting methodology for projects funded under the Green Municipal Fund of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
